Medicare SupplementAre you confused or stressed out about finding the Best Medicare Supplements? Have you been getting so much information from all the Medicare Insurance Carriers? Are you anxious about all this Medicare stuff and possibly making the wrong decision? If you are, you can sit back and relax, because I am going to give you a step-by-step Best Medicare Supplement Stress Free Guide. In this quick guide, I am going to give you downloadable resources and a roadmap to help guide you along this confusing and very stressful path.

But first some explanation on Medicare:

It goes without saying, if you are reading this article, you or someone you love is entering the world of Medicare. First the good news. Medicare is truly a “good deal” if you’re eligible, both from a cost/premium viewpoint to the actual benefits. My guess is that you are leaving your or your spouse’s employer health insurance program or individual health insurance. You have seen numerous rate increases, as well as increasing deductibles for many many years. However, that is about to change once you are successfully and properly enrolled in the right plan for you.Now the bad news. Medicare is very confusing and especially difficult to truly understand, especially with all the confusing materials you are receiving. You are probably experiencing the confusion now. It is important to understand Medicare and the different types of plans such as Original Medicare, Advantage Plans and the Medicare Supplement Plans (also referred to as a Medigap Plans). Before I begin some explanation, here is a very valuable downloadable resource for you to print, as a handy reference. Think of it as your Medicare checklist.

Step 1.

Determine your current eligibility to enroll in Original Medicare (commonly known as Medicare Parts A and B). If you’re covered by group or employer insurance, speak with Human Resources to determine if you are “required” to enroll in Medicare or not. The guidelines are very clear and your HR department should know the Federal Government requirements, however, be sure to inquire about BOTH Part A and Part B with your employer. If you’re not insured or on an individual health insurance policy, you will probably be required to enroll in both Medicare Parts A AND Medicare Part B. You can do this online at https://www.ssa.gov/ but, I recommend contacting your local Social Security Office, because they will handle your Social Security AND Medicare enrollments in person. Online could be a lot more complicated. I have heard from numerous clients how helpful and beneficial it was to go into the local office and do this in person. If you don’t know where your local Social Security Office is, call 866-253-6889 or go online to the link in the attached document.

Your goal here should be twofold:

  1. Successful understanding and enrollment of your Social Security benefits
  2. Proper and verifiable enrollment in Medicare Part A and Part B

Step 2.

Now that you have successfully determined your eligibility for Medicare enrollment, you probably have more questions than answer. Here is the next highly advisable step. Schedule a meeting via phone, live webinar, or face to face meeting with an Independent Medicare expert or specialist. I recommend someone with at least 10 years of Medicare experience. Medicare is a gigantic and complex system to understand and someone who has many years of experience in the field and can help properly educate you on the remaining processes to a successful enrollment. In my own practice, I have seen many people who have come to me to “fix” their Medicare Plans, because they did not understand what they were buying and are currently in the wrong plan. I get these calls almost daily. I don’t recommend directly calling an insurance carrier nor associations (unless they represent several insurance carriers) because all they are allowed to discuss are their own Medicare Plans. They cannot give you a competitive or clear picture of your options or available plans. Having your own Medicare expert is like having your own attorney or accountant. An expert in their professional field who you can trust. You should have access year-round to someone you can touch base with (just like your accountant) to review options and plan ahead. If you directly call the insurance carrier or associations, you’re likely dealing with a call center. That person may not be there tomorrow, let alone next month because we have all have these horrible experiences of people being here today and gone tomorrow in the service industry.

Your goal should be:

Medicare Supplement

Step 3.

Enroll in your desired Medicare plan. This can possibly be done during Step 2. Make sure you discuss effective dates of your new plan and how and when to cancel your existing coverages. Also, it is important to know and understand your premiums, payment options and ability to change plans (if you wish or your health changes) down the road.

Step 4.

Annually,  (especially during the “Open Enrollment Period”) meet or at least talk to your Medicare expert to discuss if you’re in the best plan for you for both your health as well as your medication(s) needs.
