In original Medicare, you are automatically signed up for Medicare part A, which has a zero monthly premium and covers inpatient care. To enroll in Medicare Part B, go to the social security office in your county and sign up or online at Medicare.gov. Medicare Part B, covers outpatient care, medical supplies and preventative services. If you are enrolling in Medicare for the first time, the enrollment period is the seven months surrounding your 65th birthday. Some seniors opt to enroll in what is known as a Medicare Advantage or Medigap or Medicare Supplement plan. Medicare parts A & B only some hospital and doctor charges and many do not provide dental or vision. Enrolling in a Medigap or Medicare Advantage plan policy is highly recommended by our brokers and in fact, f you do not enroll in the eligibility period you may be subject to penalties and underwriting.

Can I visit any doctor with Medicare?

You can visit any facility, doctor or health care provider that is enrolled in Medicare and is accepting new patients. Under original Medicare, you are not required to choose a primary care physician.

 Does Medicare cover prescription drugs?

With some exceptions, Medicare does not cover prescription medications. I recommend purchasing a Medicare Part D plan that adds prescription drug coverage to your Medicare policy.

Do I need to see a specialist do I need a referral?

No. As long as your specialist is in enrolled in Medicare you are not required to obtain a referral from your primary care physician. It is always a good idea to check with your carrier for the exact details about choosing your doctor or hospital.  Some Medicare plans may have other restrictions, so it’s important to not just go it alone an purchase a Medicare plan off the internet nor a call center.  They simply do not know the details that are important to you.

What else should I know about the Affordable Medicare Quick Tips?

With Medicare,  you may pay your deductible (a set amount) for your health care before Medicare begins to pay its portion. Once your deductible is met Medicare then begins to pay its share while you pay yours for services that are covered. This is also known as coinsurance and co-payments and there are may be annual limits to your out-of-pocket expenses depending on which carrier you choose.  Some plans have no deductibles or co-payments so do your homework.
